Doing better in the fashion industry
Sébastien Kopp and François-Ghislain Morillion visited a Chinese factory in 2003, after seeing the working conditions in the Chinese factories, they thought it was time for a change. The living conditions next to work were terrible. Thirty-two employees lived and slept in a space of barely twenty-five square meters, in bunk beds of up to five layers and with only a hole in the middle of the room that served as a toilet and shower.
They wanted to mean something to the world. Their choice fell on making sneakers more sustainable. In their eyes, this product was a symbol of their generation. In addition, sneakers are also very interesting from an economic point of view. They have a very high advertising budget. By not spending money on marketing and advertising, five times more can be spent on the working conditions of workers and the production and material use of the sneakers, without asking a higher selling price. That is what VEJA stands for. This makes VEJA sneakers five times more expensive to produce than sneakers from major brands.
With this vision in mind, the Kopp and Morrillion leave for Brazil, the country where you can find all raw materials for the production of shoes and is known for good working conditions. All to break up the entire production process and start again, from the raw materials, to arrive at a sneaker.
the main material of the soles of VEJA sneaker? Rubber! This rubber was found in the Amazon region, the only place in the world where rubber trees grow wild. Eco-cotton was later added to this, sourced from small local businesses. They work according to the so-called agro-ecological principle. This means that no fertilizers and pesticides are used when growing cotton. A price is also determined in advance for the cotton, so that the farmer knows how much he will earn before planting. This eco-cotton is used for the upper and together with the rubber soles, this creates sustainable and vegan sneakers from VEJA.
Since its foundation in 2005, VEJA has already released 25 different models of women's and men's sneakers. The Venturi, V-10 and Campo are the most famous and best-selling models. These are therefore lovingly re-released every season in new color combinations. Curious about these sneaker,s find them here!
